The Seal Librarian shares his pick of seal-worthy articles and posts

It will probably not be weekly, but whenever his laser-focus on pinnipeds sends him waddling toward something curious or delightful, he’ll haul it ashore to share. Here are this week’s glittering finds from his foraging flippers:

  • Caring for Geriatric Marine Mammals (Oregon Coast Aquarium): A light and lovely read on how marine mammals participate in their own care , with focus on the advanced age they can achieve in captivity – and extra points because it features Skinny, the harbor seal superager with 50 galumphs around the sun!

  • The fossil record and evolution of fur seals and sea lions (by the Coastal Paleontologist Robert Boessenecker): This one’s for the bone buffs. A deep dive into Otariid evolution, packed with fossil finds and eared seal details. Come for the hilarious intro, stay for the treasure trove of knowledge – and hints of a downright sealzilla lurking in the lineage.
