Sea Life Scarborough is home to Yorkshire’s only seal hospital, a rescue and rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned seal pups found along the rugged northeast coast of England. Since its founding in the late 1990s, originally in response to a devastating outbreak of distemper, the facility has helped rehabilitate over 600 seals and continues to play a key role in supporting the region’s recovering seal populations.
Each year, the center rescues around 30 seal pups, often separated from their mothers, injured, or suffering from illness. The hospital can care for up to four seals at a time. Once the pups are healthy and reach a safe weight, they are released back into the wild in collaboration with the RSPCA and British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).
Sea Life Scarborough also serves as a public education hub, helping visitors understand seal behavior and the importance of keeping a respectful distance from wild seals. Their team regularly responds to public reports of stranded or distressed seals, offering guidance and intervention when needed.
Like its SEA LIFE sister facilities in Hunstanton and Blankenberge, Scarborough’s seal hospital is a critical lifeline for seals along the Yorkshire coast.
