Founded in 1975 with little more than a few bathtubs and a bold vision, The Marine Mammal Center has grown into the world’s largest marine mammal hospital. Headquartered in Sausalito, California, the Center has rescued and rehabilitated over 26,000 marine mammals along the Pacific Coast, including harbor seals, California sea lions, elephant seals, dolphins, whales, and sea otters.
The Marine Mammal Center is a global leader in marine mammal medicine, scientific research, and ocean conservation. Their veterinary team has pioneered treatments for diseases like leptospirosis and domoic acid poisoning, while their research contributes to understanding the health of marine ecosystems. Education and outreach are also central to their mission, with programs that engage students, volunteers, and professionals worldwide.
In addition to their California operations, The Marine Mammal Center also runs a specialized hospital in Hawai‘i focused on the endangered Hawaiian monk seal. You can read more about Ke Kai Ola and their activities on Hawai‘i here.
