Since rescuing its first seal in 1998, the Fokarium at Stacja Morska has played a vital role in restoring the grey seal population in the Baltic Sea. Operated by the University of Gdańsk’s Institute of Oceanography, this coastal research station on the Hel Peninsula combines conservation, rehabilitation, and education. It is currently one of the few centers in the region where seals are not only rehabilitated but also bred to support their numbers.
The facility conducts scientific research on marine ecosystems and the seals’ behavior, while also welcoming the public to learn through museum exhibits and outreach programs. With a strong focus on environmental awareness, the Fokarium aims to reconnect people with the unique biodiversity of the Baltic and the importance of protecting it.
