Founded in 2007 by Robin Lindsey and Brenda Peterson, Seal Sitters is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to protecting harbor seals and other marine wildlife along the shores of West Seattle. Originally formed in response to an influx of seal pups on busy urban beaches, the group now plays a key role in safeguarding resting seals from human and pet disturbances.
Seal Sitters is part of NOAA’s West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network, contributing valuable data on marine mammal health, pollution, and disease. Volunteers respond to over 200 calls annually – most involving seal pups – and help educate the public about respectful wildlife viewing and the importance of keeping beaches safe for marine animals.
Despite fewer seals appearing in recent years, the organization continues to advocate for marine stewardship, offering educational resources for children, community outreach, and opportunities for locals to get involved.
