RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre is a dedicated rescue and rehabilitation facility located in Norfolk, England, with a legacy rooted in one of the most significant marine mammal crises in UK history. The center was born out of the 1988 phocine distemper virus outbreak, during which the RSPCA and Greenpeace launched an emergency seal rescue operation from a repurposed garage. The scale of the crisis revealed a pressing need for a permanent facility, leading to the establishment of East Winch just a few years later.

Today, the center cares for a wide variety of British wildlife, including birds, waterfowl, and small mammals, but seals remain central to its mission. East Winch is also known to work with adult seals, often suffering from entanglement injuries caused by discarded fishing gear or marine debris. These animals require intensive treatment, including specialized saltwater baths to cleanse and heal deep wounds.

With purpose-built seal pools, veterinary facilities, and a team of experienced wildlife rehabilitators, East Winch provides a haven for seals in need. The center also plays a key role in public education and awareness, sharing stories of recovery and release that highlight both the resilience of marine wildlife and the importance of conservation efforts along the UK’s coastline.
