Robbenschutz Klützer Winkel is a local conservation initiative operating under the umbrella of the German environmental NGO BUND, dedicated to safeguarding Baltic grey seals in the Bay of Wismar. Founded in 2022 within the local BUND network by seal expert Lena Hohls, the group’s work focuses on photo identification for population monitoring, advocacy for stronger regulations to reduce seal bycatch in fisheries, and the protection of key haul-out sites as designated nature reserves.
As one of the few organizations working specifically on grey seals along the eastern German Baltic coast, Robbenschutz Klützer Winkel fills an important gap in regional conservation. To ensure safe resting areas for the seals, the team also emphasizes public awareness and community engagement. They collaborate with water sports clubs and run guided seal-watching tours during the summer months. These tours not only foster appreciation for the animals but also provide valuable opportunities for collecting photo ID data. In addition, regular monitoring of human disturbances helps assess the impact of recreational activities on the local seal population. A a member of the Seal Alliance, Robbenschutz Klützer Winkel is part of a larger network of seal conservation groups.
