While not a dedicated marine rescue facility, Riga Zoo has become Latvia’s primary center for rehabilitating stranded grey seal pups from the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga. Since 1983, the zoo has admitted over 130 seals, many of which have been successfully released back into the wild. Some rehabilitated individuals have even been fitted with GPS trackers, allowing researchers to monitor their journeys across the Baltic.

For seals deemed non-releasable due to health or behavioral concerns, Riga Zoo provides long-term care either on-site or through partnerships with other facilities. The zoo works in close collaboration with the Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia, which coordinates the rescue of injured or orphaned pups found along the coastline.

In addition to its seal program, Riga Zoo plays an important role in rehabilitating native Latvian wildlife, including bats, birds of prey, and other vulnerable species. Its Turtle Sanctuary, established in 2010, offers a safe haven for unwanted pet turtles, contributing to both animal welfare and public education.
