Rescate de Lobos Marinos is a marine conservation initiative based in La Paz, Mexico, focused on the rescue of entangled sea lions along the Baja California Peninsula and throughout the Gulf of California. Operating in a region known for its rich biodiversity and vibrant marine ecosystems, the organization plays a vital role in addressing one of the most visible threats to pinnipeds: entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris.
Rather than transporting animals to a distant facility, Rescate de Lobos Marinos conducts field-based interventions. Trained teams locate and capture entangled sea lions, administer veterinary treatment for injuries on-site, and release the animals back into the wild immediately after disentanglement – minimizing stress and disruption to their natural behavior.
In addition to rescue operations, the organization contributes to scientific research by collecting data on sea lion populations, tracking entanglement trends, and monitoring the health of coastal and marine habitats. Their work supports broader conservation efforts in the Gulf of California, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically productive marine regions in the world.
