Founded in 1988 on the island of South Ronaldsay in response to the devastating outbreak of phocine distemper virus, Orkney Seal Rescue is a community-driven charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of seals in distress across the Orkney Islands. The virus, which claimed the lives of over 18,000 common seals in northern Europe, galvanized local volunteers into action, and their commitment has endured for decades.
The organization provides care for injured, orphaned, sick, or entangled seals, often relying on local residents to spot and report animals in need. With no large facility or commercial backing, Orkney Seal Rescue operates on compassion and grassroots support.
