ORCA Perú (Organización Científica para la Conservación de Animales Acuáticos) is a nonprofit founded on December 6, 2000, by marine veterinarian Dr. Carlos Yaipén-Llanos to protect and rehabilitate marine wildlife along the Peruvian coast. Initially focused on rescuing sea lions, dolphins, sea turtles, and penguins, the organization has grown into a national leader in marine mammal science, education, and conservation advocacy.
Their flagship facility, the Centro para Mamíferos Marinos del Pacífico Sur, located in San Bartolo, is Peru’s first and only marine mammal rehabilitation and research center. It provides intensive care for stranded and injured animals, including the country’s first successfully rehabilitated dolphin. The center also operates a coastal stranding response network in collaboration with the national police and environmental authorities.
ORCA Perú is known for its pioneering work, such as identifying the first continental colony of Galápagos fur seals in Peru and documenting rare whale sightings near Lima. Their outreach includes long-term educational programs, citizen science initiatives, and public campaigns to promote ocean health and animal welfare.
