NorthSealTeam is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to the protection and observation of seals resting on the beaches of the Belgian coastline from De Panne to Knokke-Heist. Founded as a non-profit, the group emerged in response to the growing presence of seals on Belgium’s shores, a relatively recent phenomenon that has brought both wonder and new conservation challenges.

NorthSealTeam shines with its hyper-local, rapid-response structure: each coastal municipality has its own team of trained volunteers who spring into action when a seal sighting is reported. Their first priority is public safety and seal welfare: gently guiding curious beachgoers and pets to maintain a respectful distance. This “Guard & Protect” approach is paired with educational outreach, as volunteers share fascinating facts about these apex coastal predators with passersby.

Beyond on-the-ground protection, NorthSealTeam contributes to scientific research by documenting each seal encounter with clear imagery and long-form observation data. In cases where a seal pup is injured or ill, they coordinate with SeaLife Blankenberge rescue facilities to ensure proper care and rehabilitation, followed by a safe release back into the wild.

The group also invests in public awareness through playful workshops and engaging lectures aimed at all ages. Their active presence on social media helps foster a community of seal enthusiasts and conservation-minded citizens.
