National Marine Life Center (NMLC) is an independent nonprofit marine animal hospital and education center based in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Established in 1995 by a coalition of concerned citizens and marine professionals, the center was founded in response to the urgent need for a dedicated rehabilitation facility in the region. NMLC focuses on the rehabilitation and release of stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, while also advancing marine science, education, and conservation.
Located near Cape Cod, a known hotspot for marine animal strandings, NMLC plays a critical role in responding to cases involving cold-stunned sea turtles during the winter months, as well as harbor, gray, and harp seals. On occasion, the center also assists with small cetaceans such as dolphins and porpoises.
The center’s multifaceted work includes providing veterinary care and rehabilitation for sick and injured animals, conducting scientific research on marine wildlife health and ocean ecosystems, and offering education programs for schools and community groups. Public engagement is a key part of its mission, with outreach efforts centered around its Discovery Center and a variety of seasonal events.
