Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, California, began its journey in 1978 as part of Marineland of the Pacific, a pioneering marine park. When Marineland closed in 1987, the rescue operation was reorganized and reopened in 1992 as an independent nonprofit dedicated to the rehabilitation of seals, sea lions, and fur seals along the Southern California coast.

Today, the center functions as a full-fledged marine mammal hospital, providing emergency veterinary care, diagnostics, and long-term rehabilitation for animals suffering from malnutrition, injuries, entanglements, and disease. At any given time, the facility may be caring for 40–50 patients, each receiving individualized treatment from trained staff and volunteers.

The center also features a visitor area with educational exhibits, patient viewing, and volunteer-led tours, helping the public understand the challenges marine mammals face and the importance of ocean stewardship. Admission is free, and the center welcomes thousands of visitors annually, including school groups and community organizations.

Beyond rehabilitation, the Marine Mammal Care Center contributes to scientific research, collaborates with other rescue centers, and plays a vital role in public education and conservation advocacy.
