Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket (MMAN) began in 1977 as the Nantucket Marine Mammal Conservation Program, founded by Jean Rioux to raise awareness and provide direct aid to marine mammals in distress. After years of collaboration with the New England Aquarium, the organization evolved into MMAN, continuing its mission with renewed independence and expanded scope.

Today, MMAN is an all-volunteer nonprofit operating under agreement with NOAA Fisheries. The team responds to stranded, entangled, or injured marine mammals (primarily seals, dolphins, and whales) across Nantucket and its neighboring islands. Their work includes disentangling pinnipeds from fishing gear, escorting stranded cetaceans to safer waters, and transporting animals to rehabilitation centers when needed. They also assist cold-stunned sea turtles and contribute scientific data to federal authorities.

Beyond rescue operations, MMAN is deeply committed to education and advocacy. They maintain a 24-hour hotline, engage with local schools, and participate in community events to promote marine stewardship. As a member of the World Cetacean Alliance and Whales Need US Coalition, MMAN also advocates for marine mammal protection on a national and international level.
