Founded to address the growing need for coordinated marine animal rescue and response in Canada’s Maritime Provinces, the Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) has become a cornerstone of conservation efforts in the region. While not exclusively focused on pinnipeds, MARS plays a vital role in safeguarding seals and other marine mammals through its stranding response network, public education, and scientific research.

Operating across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, MARS responds to a wide range of incidents involving marine animals: entanglements, strandings (both live and deceased), injuries, and orphaned young. Pinnipeds, particularly harbor seals and grey seals, are among the species frequently encountered.

MARS combines rapid response with long-term data collection and community engagement. Their trained staff and volunteers are equipped to assess and manage complex situations, often using drones and boats to safely reach stranded animals in remote or hazardous locations.

MARS also contributes to broader conservation goals by collaborating with national and international networks, sharing data on marine animal health, mortality, and human impact. Their work feeds into policy discussions and helps shape best practices for marine wildlife protection. For pinniped enthusiasts, MARS offers a glimpse into the interconnected world of marine animal conservation, where seals are part of a larger story of ocean stewardship.
