In the countryside of North Ayrshire, Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Centre has been a lifeline for Scotland’s injured and orphaned wildlife since its founding in 1979. What began with a single fox cub rescued by founders Andy and Gaynor Christie has grown into one of the UK’s most respected wildlife hospitals. Officially registered as a charity in 1986, Hessilhead now spans a 20-acre site of woodland, marsh, and open water.
The centre treats over 3,000 animals annually, ranging from garden birds and hedgehogs to deer, otters – and seals. Their dedicated swan and seal hospital, complete with indoor pools and heat lamps, is a standout feature. During storm seasons, Hessilhead has seen record numbers of grey seal pups brought in, injured and malnourished. These pups receive round-the-clock care, including antibiotics, specialized diets, and social rehabilitation in custom-built enclosures.
At Hessilhead, wild animals are treated with minimal human contact to preserve their natural instincts. The centre isn’t open to the public for this reason, though it occasionally hosts open days to share its mission. Beyond the medical care, the Christies have contributed decades of insight into Scotland’s shifting wildlife populations. Their work has earned them MBEs and the admiration of conservationists across the UK.
