GSPCA (Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), founded in 1873, is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the Channel Islands. While its work spans everything from domestic pets to exotic wildlife, the GSPCA has also become a vital lifeline for stranded and injured grey seal pups found around Guernsey and Jersey.

Over the past 14 years, the GSPCA has rehabilitated and released more than 45 seals back into the wild. Seal pups often arrive severely underweight, dehydrated, and suffering from infections, requiring round-the-clock veterinary attention and specialized diets.

The charity’s seal care program is currently undergoing a major transformation. With its old rehabilitation facilities reaching the end of their usable life, the GSPCA is building a new Wildlife Hospital featuring purpose-built seal facilities as part of its ambitious Big Build project. Temporary housing has been set up to ensure continued care during construction, and the team is actively seeking support and partnerships to expand their capacity.

Led by Geoff George, Head of Marine Mammals, and Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, the organization continues to advocate for marine conservation and public awareness. Their seal rescue work is just one facet of a broader mission: to prevent cruelty, rescue animals in distress, and foster compassion across the island community.
