Located on the Dutch island of Texel, Ecomare has roots dating back to 1929, when a nature museum first opened its doors. Seal rehabilitation began in 1952, making it one of the oldest seal rescue centers in the world. Today, Ecomare, in the Duinen van Texel National Park on the Wadden Sea, continues to combine the roles of wildlife hospital and public education center. It cares for seals and coastal birds, showcases native marine life through its aquarium exhibits, and teaches visitors about the unique Wadden Sea ecosystem. Some seals have become permanent residents, including two ringed seals once housed in a zoo – now living out their days in the care of Ecomareβs team.
