What started with Sue Sayer observing and recording grey seals in Cornwall in the early 2000s evolved into one of the finest data bases and repositories of information about the species in the United Kingdom, with long-term records and photo IDs of hundreds of individual seals and keen knowledge about the state of the species and their habitat on the Cornish coast.

Apart from collecting invaluable data, volunteers of the Seal Research Trust also work on educating people and organizations about best practice around seals and raising awareness about seal conservation, while also acting as “seal guides” (or rather “human guides”) around exposed pupping sites or other vulnerable locations, and sometimes even a walrus far from home.

The Seal Research Trust is a widely recognized, award-winning citizen science project that has been able to broaden our horizon concerning the life-stories, individual personalities, and human-made challenges of seals, and continues to fight for seal and ocean conservation in Cornwall and beyond.
