The Australian Marine Wildlife Research & Rescue Organisation (AMWRRO) emerged from the pioneering efforts of Project Dolphin Safe and the South Australian Seabird Rescue. Today, it stands as South Australia’s only licensed facility dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine wildlife, including seals, sea lions, seabirds, and even sea turtles.

While AMWRRO’s primary focus remains on marine mammals and birds, their care extends to land-based species affected by environmental disasters, such as koalas and kangaroos injured in bushfires. AMWRRO regularly treats Australian fur seals and Australian sea lions, two species native to southern waters. Patients are often rescued from entanglements, malnutrition, or illness, and undergo intensive care before being released in protected coastal zones. Their facilities include individual recovery pools for marine mammals, a 1,100 m² wetland complex, and specialized enclosures for seabirds and land mammals.

AMWRRO contributes to scientific research on marine wildlife health and conservation, publishing findings and collaborating with universities and environmental agencies. Their data helps shape policy and improve rescue protocols across Australia.
