Founded in 2010 by veterinarian Dr. Janine Bahr–van Gemmert and wildlife expert André van Gemmert, the Robbenzentrum Föhr is a small, independent initiative dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals on the island of Föhr. Unlike the seal centers authorized by Germany’s coastal states, this center operates outside the official framework, yet has quietly earned respect for its tireless work and remote location.
The center provides first aid and veterinary care to stranded or injured seals. Its location on Föhr fills a critical gap in the rescue network, offering help to animals that might otherwise be unreachable in time.
Beyond hands-on rescue, the Robbenzentrum engages in public education, international collaboration, and marine mammal research, often partnering with wildlife stations across Europe. The team also runs the Tierhuus, a 24/7 wild animal rescue and rehabilitation center, and hosts events and exhibitions to raise awareness about marine conservation.
Despite occasional tension with regulatory authorities, the Robbenzentrum continues to operate with strong community support and a deep commitment to animal welfare, making it one of Germany’s most unconventional yet vital seal rescue efforts.
